German Christmas Markets - 2006

Our trip, in 2006, to tour the Christmas Markets in Germany.

We traveled by train to cities in Bavaria and parts of the former East Germany.

Germany: The 1st class section of an ICE train. We used an Eurail Pass that allowed us unlimited train travel for 15 days.

Augsburg: The first town we visited was Augsburg. We chose to stay here because we could find an inexpensive hotel, and because it had good train service to the rest of Bavaria.

Augsburg: Christmas Market - These candle arches, called Schwibbogen, were very popular. Most are electric, but there were a few that held candles. We saw a lot of them in windows at night.

Augsburg: Christmas Market - Giant Christmas Pyramid. Almost every Christmas Market had at least one of these. Many of them were on top of Gluhwein booths.

Augsburg: Christmas Market - The windows of the building in the background had been turned into a giant Advent calendar. Each night they uncovered a new window.

Neuschwanstein: Prince Ludwig II of Bavaria's fairy tale monument to the composer Richard Wagner. Each room was decorated to match one of Wagner's operas.

Füssen: We took the train to Füssen to get to Neuschwanstein. From the Füssen train station you take a bus to the castle. When we went, they were working on the train tracks, so the train stopped before Füssen. We all got on a bus, waited for them to jump start the bus, and rode to the Füssen train station. The return trip was the opposite (without the Jump Starting part). :-)

Trains: The Civilized way to travel... Seriously, you can get to most parts of Germany easily by train. Some spots, however, still require a car, unless you don't mind taking three trains, a bus and possibly a walk across town between different stations.

: Nüremberg - Christmas Market - This was a Monday,and it was fairly crowded. The place is supposed to be mobbed on the weekends. If our experiences at other weekend Christmas Markets are any indication, I would believe it.

: Nüremberg - Christmas Market - Zwetschgenmännlein (prune people). Hand made from dried fruit & nuts, with hand made clothing. Unfortunately, you cant bring these home to the US due to Agriculture
